The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has taken a critical step by writing to the Senate Secretariat, recommending that Sadiq Sanjrani’s Senate seat be declared vacant.
This move follows Sanjrani’s recent election to the Balochistan Assembly.
According to the ECP letter, the Senate chairman became a member of the provincial legislature, and his seat in the Upper House of Parliament should be declared empty.
According to reports, Sadiq Sanjrani’s ability to vote in the presidential election is contingent on him taking the oath as a member of the Balochistan Assembly. Until this criteria is met, he will be unable to vote in the upcoming presidential election.”To be a voter in the presidential election, one must have taken an oath as a member of a provincial assembly,” the letter went on to say.
The election commission validated Sanjrani’s successful election to the provincial legislature. However, constitutional scholars have pointed out that since February 16, when Sanjrani was elected to the provincial legislature, he has no longer been a senator. “Sanjrani has not taken oath as an MPA yet,” it stated.
