Electricity prices set to increase for Karachi citizens

Under the monthly Fuel Cost Adjustment (FCA), K-Electric requested on Tuesday that the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) raise the price of power by Rs5.45 per unit.

Citing growing fuel costs, the power provider requests this hike for the months of May and June. K-Electric has specifically asked for a rise of Rs. 2.53 per unit in May and an extra Rs. 2.92 per unit in June.

Before making a final decision, NEPRA is expected to analyze K-Electric’s application and take into account feedback from various stakeholders at a hearing on the topic that is set for today, Tuesday. Whether or not the planned rise is authorized will depend on how this hearing plays out.The FCA mechanism, which enables power companies to modify energy tariffs in response to changes in fuel prices, is what K-Electric is requesting. This system makes sure that consumer costs are impacted by changes in fuel prices, preserving the utility company’s financial stability.

At a time when many Karachi residents are already struggling with expensive electricity bills and frequent power outages, there is a possibility of an increase. Customers and industry watchers will be closely monitoring NEPRA’s decision because it will have an immediate impact on the cost of living and business operations in the city.
