England have recalled Ollie Robinson after a two year absence from Test cricket for the opening match against New Zealand national cricket team at Lord’s on 4 June. The selectors also handed first time call ups to Emilio Gay, James Rew and Sonny Baker following England’s disappointing Ashes campaign in Australia.
Zak Crawley Dropped After Poor Ashes Series
Zak Crawley has lost his place in the squad after struggling during the Ashes tour, where England suffered a heavy 4 to 1 series defeat. Since captain Ben Stokes and coach Brendon McCullum took charge in 2022, Crawley had remained a regular part of the Test setup.
Durham opener Emilio Gay is expected to replace Crawley at the top of the batting order. The 26 year old has impressed in county cricket with consistent performances and strong technique.
England Add Young Talent to Test Squad
England continued their squad rebuild by selecting wicketkeeper batter James Rew and fast bowler Sonny Baker for the first time. Rew, aged 22, will provide backup in both batting and wicketkeeping roles.
Spinner Shoaib Bashir also returns to the squad after missing the entire Ashes series. He will compete with Rehan Ahmed for the specialist spin role. Ahmed could make his first home Test appearance if selected in the final playing XI.
Ollie Robinson Returns to Lead England Pace Attack
The return of Ollie Robinson is one of the biggest talking points ahead of the New Zealand series. England’s bowling attack is entering a new era after the retirements of Stuart Broad, James Anderson and Chris Woakes over recent years.
Robinson has taken 76 wickets in 20 Test matches at an impressive average below 23. Many viewed him as the natural successor to Anderson and Broad with the new ball. However, injuries and fitness concerns pushed him out of the side after the India tour in 2024.
The Sussex fast bowler dealt with back injuries during his previous Test appearances against Australia and India. England management now believe he can play a major role in rebuilding the bowling unit.
Marcus North Appointed England National Selector
England also confirmed the appointment of Marcus North as the new national selector. The former Australian batter replaces Luke Wright, who stepped down after the Ashes for personal reasons.
North becomes the first overseas figure to lead England’s selection panel, marking another major change within the team structure.
