The semi-final of the T20 World Cup in Mumbai is a huge challenge. Few challenges are more difficult than England’s match against India at Wankhede Stadium. India is at home and in good form. They also look confident. England arrives on the back of a winning streak of five matches, yet they are still second favorites.
There are still reasons to be hopeful. They also have real worries that can hurt them.
Will Jacks carried England at key moments
Will Jacks is England’s best player at this tournament. Jacks has been awarded player of match against Nepal, Italy and Sri Lanka. Shane Watson is the only man to have won four of these awards at a men’s T20 World Cup.
Jacks is a player who has excelled with bat and ball. Jacks bats as number 7 and is often the hero of the team in the last overs. He has scored 162 runs in the final overs, the highest total of any player this season. His 191 total runs are the most by anyone outside of the top four.
India will rely heavily on the all-rounders Hardik Paandya and Shivam Dube in their middle order. Jacks outperforms them at the moment when pressure is high.
Jofra’s Powerplay Spell is Vital
England must start the game quickly if they want to defeat India. South Africa’s removal of three batters during the powerplay was India’s only loss. Suryakumar Jadav stabilised the innings after Suryakumar took four early wickets.
Jofra archer is the star of this show. In his first two games, he conceded 90 runs. He has since found his rhythm and speed.
In the first six deliveries, he has taken eight of his ten wickets. England has 18 powerplay wickets – six more than India. Archer bowled 65 dotballs from 114 balls in this phase. In five T20 Internationals, he has dismissed Sanju Samson 3 times. This record is important.
England’s highest order must react
The biggest problem for England is still their first order. As an opening pairing, Phil Salt and Jos buttler have a combined average of just 12. The two entered the tournament ranked as top T20 batsmen in the world.
Salt is a risk taker and plays a game that’s aggressive. He has gone thirteen innings without a century, despite England averaging ten centuries every fourteen T20s. Buttler is also struggling, scoring five low-scores in a single row.
Buttler loves to bat at Wankhede. In 2022, he scored 116 for the Rajasthan Royals. India faces similar worries with Abhishek Singh, who mixed one fifty and three ducks.
Numbers reveal a much deeper issue
The average score of England’s six best players is 21.9. Namibia and Oman are the only countries with worse numbers. In average, their six best players are able to get out of the ball every 16.1 shots. This is the lowest rate of teams that reached Super 8 stage.
The other teams also scored less goals. The previous round was played on slow Sri Lankan pitches, but this does not explain all. The batting, apart from Harry Brooks’ century against Pakistan has been inconsistent.
