The prime minister urged both sides to “step back from the brink” during his speech to the UN General Assembly.
It follows Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s declaration that his country’s armed forces will continue to “fight at full force” and that reports of a possible cease-fire agreement were “not true.”
Speaking to a global audience in New York, Sir Keir declared: “I urge Israel and Hezbollah to put an end to their hostilities and pull back from the edge.
“We need an immediate ceasefire to provide space for a diplomatic settlement,” the prime minister of the United Kingdom continued. “We are working with all partners to that end.”
Earlier in his UN visit, Sir Keir chastised Russia at a security council meeting for its invasion of Ukraine.
Russia and the United Kingdom both hold permanent memberships in the UN Security Council.
In his speech to the general assembly, Sir Keir made a suggestion that he would want to punish Russia further for its invasion.
He declared: “We need to infuse conflict resolution and conflict prevention with fresh vitality and inventiveness, stop the trend toward ever-increasing violence, fit the institutions of peace for their intended purpose, and hold members of the UN Charter accountable.
