The overflowing Sutlej River in Punjab is causing widespread flooding in Bahawalnagar and the surrounding areas, displacing thousands of people and submerging dozens of villages.
Relief camps have been established by the government in the districts impacted by the floods, but many people—many of them children—still need immediate help to be evacuated.
More than 800 people have been killed since late June as a result of Pakistan’s intense monsoon rains, which have flooded dams, swollen rivers, and caused flash floods. India released more water from its dams this week due to the heavy rains, which caused the river flows in Punjab to rise downstream.
Pakistan evacuated around 210,000 inhabitants along the Indian-flowing Ravi, Sutlej, and Chenab rivers, according to the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA).
