Chief of Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam (JUI), Maulana Fazlur Rehman, expressed his strong opposition on Thursday to the extension of service terms in the military, bureaucracy, and judiciary, describing the practice as essentially incorrect.
He made these comments at a National Assembly meeting in Islamabad, when he also criticized General Pervez Musharraf’s administration for raising the retirement age for judges.
Why people who previously opposed these expansions are now in favor of them, the head of JUI questioned. “The process of granting extensions is flawed, whether in the army, the judiciary, or the bureaucracy,” he declared. “The parliament may also demand extensions tomorrow if this continues.”
Noting that court disputes can stretch on for generations, Fazlur Rehman went on to highlight other flaws in the legal system.
