ISLAMABAD: The “controversial” constitutional package, which sought to alter Pakistan’s judicial and parliamentary systems, has been rejected in its entirety by Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam Fazl (JUI-F) Chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman. Rehman rose to prominence when both the opposition and the government sought his support.
Speaking to reporters following a luncheon at Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader Asad Qaiser’s home on Wednesday, the seasoned politician declared, “The draft of the proposed amendments, provided to the opposition, was not acceptable in any way.”
The PTI’s appeal last month for the early retirement of Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Qazi Faez Isa, who is scheduled to retire in October of this year, prompted the government to push the proposed constitutional package amid rumors of a possible extension in Isa’s term.
