FIFA will make a long-awaited comeback in 2026, following its split with EA. This time, Netflix has secured exclusive rights to the game, changing the way fans will experience it.
Netflix Brings FIFA Back
After parting ways with Electronic Arts, FIFA lacked a dedicated publisher. EA had dropped the FIFA name in 2022 due to high licensing costs, continuing its series as EA Sports FC. Now, Netflix steps in to revive the franchise.
The game will be developed by Delphi Interactive, a studio that has yet to release a title. It will launch ahead of the 2026 World Cup. Subscribers can play online via the Netflix app on iOS and Android or on select TVs using a phone as a controller.
FIFA’s Lasting Legacy
EA Sports released the first FIFA game in 1993. Over 30 years, it built a fanbase of around 150 million players. Even after rebranding, EA FC 24 became the UK’s best-selling game in 2023.
FIFA president Gianni Infantino said the partnership with Netflix marks “the beginning of a new era of digital football.” The game will be free for Netflix subscribers, which he called a historic step for FIFA.
Developer Goals and Fan Reactions
Delphi Interactive is also working with IO Interactive on the James Bond game, 007: First Light. CEO Casper Daugaar said the team, as lifelong FIFA fans, wants to make the game “the most fun, approachable, and global football game ever.”
Fans reacted with mixed opinions. Many questioned whether a mobile-first approach was suitable. One user on X commented, “FIFA should never have left EA. Let’s see what the new game offers.”
