In the Himalayan region of Indian-occupied Ladakh, police fought with hundreds of demonstrators calling for more autonomy on Wednesday, sparking at least five fatalities and “dozens” injuries, according to authorities.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party headquarters and a police vehicle were set on fire by protesters in the capital city of Leh, while police used batons and tear gas to scatter the masses, according to the police.
An unnamed police officer in Leh told AFP, “Five deaths were reported after the protests,” as he was not authorized to speak to reporters. “The number of injured is in the dozens.”
As Regzin Sangdup, another police officer, told AFP, “several people, including some policemen, were injured.”
