Flock Introduces Audit System to Prevent Police Misuse

The creator and CEO of Flock, a US surveillance company, acknowledges that additional measures to stop police abuse of their technology should have been implemented sooner.

Flock has been used by police to monitor strangers and track romantic partners, which has sparked a rising public outcry against the corporation. Additionally, it has been used to locate missing persons and stolen vehicles.

Garrett Langley responded, “Yeah… yes,” when asked if it had taken Flock too long to shield tens of thousands of its cameras, license plate readers, and drones from police abuse.

Flock Safety Cuts Data Retention After Police Misuse

In addition to automatically flagging unusual searches and uses, Flock is reducing the duration of most data retention from 30 days to seven days.

In one instance, authorities have utilized flock cameras to follow a lady who had an abortion in addition to present and past amorous relationships.

Misuse of the technology has led to police resignations and terminations across the United States.

Despite not being accused of any misconduct, a guy in Indiana recently informed local television that he discovered that police had placed a Flock alert for his car through a public records request.

Due to public outcry, at least 50 cities have severed their connections with Flock this year.

Flock Faces Growing Scrutiny Over Police Misuse

But in the previous three months, 16 more towns that had stopped using Flock services had returned to the firm, Langley told the press. According to him, the ratio of new clients to existing ones is typically 7:1.

A black, inconspicuous Flock camera mounted on a pole next to a crosswalk in Washington, DC.

Law enforcement’s misuse of Flock Safety’s technology has increased.

Six months ago, according to Langley, he questioned the company’s board about why Flock appeared to be receiving more attention from the general public.

This coincided with the cancelation of a relationship between Flock and Amazon’s Ring, a doorbell camera company, following an outrage over an advertisement that raised concerns about undesired spying.

Police Misuse Has Increased Scrutiny of Flock

“They’re correct. I believe it ought to be mandatory.

“Our employes and communities have made it clear that they expect companies like Flock to have a stronger point of view as the expert,” he continued. I objected to it because I didn’t want to be responsible for it.

Langley has now taken up that duty. He is promoting his company’s goods as essential to fighting crime and enhancing American law enforcement while simultaneously fortifying Flock’s security measures.

According to him, cities that don’t adopt Flock are essentially choosing “to be less safe.”

He does not, however, dispute that law enforcement personnel have abused Flock.

Flock Makes Its Audit System Standard

According to Langley, the public increasingly views the company as a channel for their mounting worries about technology and privacy because of the cameras that are prominently displayed in towns and neighborhoods.”It’s easier to get angry because you can see our cameras,” Langley said.

There isn’t a complete legislation in the US that protects or regulates the gathering, use, or sale of people’s personal information.

Langley brought up a woman he had recently met in Cleveland who was adamantly opposed to Flock in her neighborhood.

When he questioned her about why she detested the technology so much, she said that it was ultimately a weapon used by cops to “abuse their power.”

According to Langley, it came out that cops “kind of feel the same way” as her.

Flock Introduces Audit System to Prevent Police Misuse

As a result, Flock now has a new audit capability that was made available as an option earlier this year.

It highlights odd search behavior and automatically generates an audit trail of all searches made on Flock.

When the capability became available, the majority of police clients activated it. Because of the widespread misuse, Langley concluded that Flock should standardize the audit feature.

Officers who misuse their authority are “horrible,” according to Langley, and they ought to face consequences other than being fired.Who will lead the charge to remove abusive police officers? “Register me,” Langley said. “These people are trusted with lethal weaponry.
