In order to redirect the Chenab River’s increasing waters, Punjabi authorities have chosen to conduct a controlled breach at the Sher Shah embankment in Multan. This decision comes as southern districts are still dealing with disastrous floods that have forced hundreds of thousands of residents to relocate.
With water levels at Sher Shah already recorded at 400,000 cusecs, the irrigation department predicts that a flow of more than 540,000 cusecs from Trimmu will approach Multan’s borders in the next several days.
Officials verified that evacuation announcements were in progress and that neighboring settlements had been notified.
An irrigation official stated, “The breach is being carried out due to a lack of further capacity to contain the water, and riverbed areas have already been inundated.”
