ISLAMABAD: On Sunday, the Foreign Office (FO) disputed the veracity of a news making the rounds on social media concerning Germany turning over the perpetrators of the attack on the Pakistani embassy in Frankfurt.
FO Spokesman Mumtaz Zahra Baloch called the social media report “fake news” when asked if the suspects in the vandalism had been turned over to Pakistan, as had been stated in the report.
On July 20, during a protest in Frankfurt, the Pakistani embassy was attacked by dozens of miscreants. The German police then took two individuals into custody.
According to reports, Afghan nationals were permitted to hold a nonviolent demonstration by German authorities. Tensions increased, though, when the demonstrators became aggressive, threw stones at the consulate, and took down the national flag.
German police had been using camera footage to identify other demonstrators, so they expected to make more arrests after apprehending two Afghan nationals.
Pakistan denounced the terrorist group’s attack on its consulate and the German government’s inability to ensure the safety and security of the consular mission’s property a day after the incident.
Pakistan, meantime, has sent a formal complaint over the event by calling Germany’s top diplomat.
According to the FO statement, the host government is in charge of upholding the 1963 Vienna Convention on Consular Relations, which places responsibility for the grounds’ security and the safety of diplomats on its shoulders.
