Russia was accused by NATO allies at the UN on Monday of violating the alliance’s airspace in Poland and Estonia, which Britain said may lead to an armed clash.
British Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper confronted Russia during a UN Security Council meeting, saying: “Your careless actions put NATO and Russia at risk of direct armed confrontation. Be assured that although our alliance is defensive, we are prepared to defend NATO’s territory and sky.
“If we need to confront planes operating in Nato space without permission then we will do so,” she stated.
