ISLAMABAD: The Ministry of Law and Justice announced the elevation of three high court judges, including the chief justices of the high courts in Sindh and Lahore, on Tuesday. They then took the oath of office as Supreme Court judges.
LHC Chief Justice Malik Shahzad Ahmad Khan, SHC Chief Justice Aqeel Ahmed Abbasi, and LHC Justice Shahid Bilal Hassan were sworn in by Chief Justice of Pakistan Qazi Faez Isa.
Today’s oath-taking ceremony took place in the supreme court.
The appointments of the aforementioned high court justices to the SC were announced by the law and justice ministry one day earlier, after President Asif Ali Zardari gave his consent in accordance with Article 177.
President Zardari nominated Justice Shujaat Ali Khan as acting LHC CJ pursuant to Article following the promotion of LHC Chief Justice Shahzad.
It further said that until Justice Shujaat is appointed to the top position, she will carry out her duties as acting LHC CJ.
In addition to recommending the promotion of the LHC judge to the top court earlier this month, the Judicial Commission of Pakistan (JCP) had also suggested the elevation of chief justices of the SHC and LHC to the highest court.
