As calls for football to take a stand are fueled by Israel’s military operation in Gaza and other global tensions, FIFA President Gianni Infantino stated on Thursday that while football cannot resolve disputes, it must convey a message of peace and unity.
Infantino stated at a FIFA Council meeting in Zurich, “At FIFA, we are committed to using the power of football to bring people together in a divided world.”
Although the governing body of world football is unable to resolve geopolitical conflicts, Infantino stated that “it can and must promote football around the world by harnessing its unifying, educational, cultural, and humanitarian values.”
Palestinian authorities have repeatedly called for FIFA to take action regarding the Gaza War, and they want Israel to be barred from playing football internationally.
