SLAMABAD: Iran criticized the US Congress’ resolution on Sunday and asked for a probe into allegations of “interference or irregularities” in the elections on February 8.
Iran’s ambassador to Pakistan, Dr. Reza Amiri Moghadam, declared, “We condemn controversial US resolution on Pakistan elections.”
With a resounding majority, the US House of Representatives demanded earlier this week a “full and independent investigation of claims of interference or irregularities” in the polls.
On Tuesday, the resolution HR 901 was carried by a resounding 368 votes to seven, representing 85% of the American politicians present in the legislature.
The US legislators had underscored in the resolution the necessity of Pakistani citizens engaging in their nation’s democratic process, even months after the country’s general elections were disputed.
The US Congress resolution was denounced by the National Assembly on Friday, which also described it as “contrary to facts” and “interference” in its internal affairs in a resolution that was passed.
Lawmaker Shaista Pervaiz Malik of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) introduced the motion, which was approved by the National Assembly by a majority vote in the midst of a boisterous demonstration by the opposition benches.
“Open interference in the domestic affairs of an independent member of the United Nations” is how Moghadam put his dissatisfaction with the US resolution.
