KATHMANDU: Following the resignation of Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli due to violent anti-graft protests, former Chief Justice Sushila Karki will be sworn in as Nepal’s first female leader later on Friday, according to the president’s office.
Following discussions between Paudel, army leader Ashok Raj Sigdel, and the demonstrators who spearheaded Nepal’s biggest upheaval in recent memory, Karki’s appointment was announced by President Ramchandra Paudel’s administration.
This week’s anti-graft demonstrations by the “Gen Z” movement—named for the age of its primarily youthful supporters—saw 51 fatalities and over 1,300 injuries.
A social media restriction that has subsequently been lifted served as the impetus for the demonstration. Only after Oli resigned on Tuesday did the violence stop.
