On Thursday morning, he was checked into the Napa County jail located in California.
The 42-year-old professional dancer from Russia competed in Strictly Come Dancing’s eighth season in 2010, taking home the title with celebrity partner Kara Tointon.
He began making frequent appearances on the US version of the show, Dancing With the Stars, in 2014.
According to online jail records, Mr. Chigvintsev was detained for physical harm to his spouse in violation of California Penal Code section 273.5(a).
Traumatic injury caused by domestic abuse to a spouse, cohabitant, or other parent, whether current or past, is covered in this section. The offense may be prosecuted as a felony or a misdemeanor.
The celebrity is said to have been released later on Thursday afternoon after posting a $25,000 (£19,000) bond.
It is unclear if there is any involvement at all from Mr. Chigvintsev’s current wife.
He married star Nikki Bella in 2022; the two first crossed paths on Dancing With the Stars in 2017.
Since then, Ms. Bella has quit professional wrestling and adopted the name Nikki Garcia.
The pair, who have a son together, recently celebrated their second wedding anniversary.
