After only nine months in office, Prime Minister Francois Bayrou is anticipated to be ousted by France’s parliament on Monday, leaving President Emmanuel Macron in a difficult situation and causing further political uncertainty for the important EU member.
Even his friends were taken by surprise when Bayrou called for a confidence vote to overcome a months-long impasse over his austerity budget, which calls for cost savings of around 44 billion euros ($52 billion) to lower France’s debt load.
It is extremely unlikely that he would receive enough support to survive—he needs a majority of the 577 MPs in the National Assembly—because opposition parties from all sides have stated that they will vote against his minority government.
