Amidst a political crisis, the French parliament voted Monday to overthrow the government due to its plans to control the country’s soaring debt, leaving President Emmanuel Macron to pick a fifth prime minister in less than two years.
Just nine months have passed since Francois Bayrou, 74, became prime minister. Now that he has to submit his resignation, Macron’s options are becoming more limited as financial markets express concern about France’s political and economic predicament.
In an attempt to gain parliamentary support for his plan to reduce a deficit that is almost twice the EU’s 3% ceiling and begin addressing a debt load equal to 114% of GDP, Bayrou had suddenly summoned the vote.
