Generation Z Protests Rock Mexico After Mayor’s Murder Amid Rising Violence

Thousands of Gen Z protesters take to Mexico’s streets after Mayor Carlos Manzo’s murder, clashing with police and demanding justice.

Mass protests erupted across Mexico on Saturday as thousands of demonstrators, many rallying under the banner of “Generation Z,” took to the streets following the murder of Uruapan Mayor Carlos Manzo earlier this month.

The violence began on November 1, when Mayor Manzo was shot dead during a public Day of the Dead celebration in Michoacán. His death has intensified public outrage over Mexico’s escalating crime, corruption, and culture of impunity.

In Mexico City, protests outside the National Palace escalated into clashes with riot police. Witnesses reported that hooded demonstrators tore down security fences, prompting authorities to deploy tear gas. Around 100 officers were injured, with 40 requiring hospital treatment, while 20 civilians were also hurt. Authorities confirmed 20 arrests and another 20 citations for administrative offenses. Some reports even stated that police threw stones at protesters after they entered the palace perimeter.

Demonstrators voiced anger at the ruling Morena party, chanting slogans like “Out, Morena” and blaming the government for failing to curb violence. Others accused state institutions of indirectly causing the mayor’s death.

The movement behind the protests, identifying itself as “Generation Z Mexico,” claims to be a non-partisan group of young people demanding justice, accountability, and an end to corruption. While Generation Z typically refers to those born between 1997 and 2012, the marches also attracted older political activists.

President Claudia Sheinbaum’s administration questioned the protests’ authenticity, suggesting involvement from right-wing opponents and amplification via social media bots. Some prominent Gen Z influencers distanced themselves from the marches, whereas figures like former President Vicente Fox and billionaire Ricardo Salinas Pliego publicly supported them.

This wave of activism in Mexico reflects a global trend of Gen Z-led protests, which have emerged this year across Asia and Africa, demanding democratic reforms and accountability. Similar movements in Nepal and Madagascar led to major political upheavals, highlighting the growing influence of younger generations on global politics.
