Coach Kirby Smart stated that before Thursday’s practice, he visited with Thomas on Tuesday and informed the junior of the decision.
Thomas was detained early Friday on felony child cruelty and misdemeanor violence charges. Later Friday, Georgia confirmed that Thomas had been suspended indefinitely. Thomas’ dismissal from the squad became permanent with Thursday’s statement.
Thomas was released on a $3,500 bail Tuesday.
“I got the opportunity to sit down and speak with him face to face on Tuesday, which I think was incredibly essential to let him know he can no longer be a part of it.
He realizes that, and we wish him all the best in the future.”
Last season, Thomas had 23 receptions for 383 yards and one score, making him one of quarterback Carson Beck’s top returning targets.
This is Thomas’s second arrest in two years. On January 23, 2023, University of Georgia police arrested Thomas, a transfer from Mississippi State, on a felony charge of false imprisonment and a misdemeanor count of family violence battery. Thomas entered a pretrial diversion program, and the charges were withdrawn.
