The media claims that Imran Khan, the founder of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), had acknowledged calling for protests outside the Pakistan Army’s General Headquarters (GHQ) in Rawalpindi before his arrest on May 9 have been denied by the party.
Former speaker of the National Assembly and prominent PTI figure Asad Qaiser made the following statement on a chat show on a private news channel: “We [categorically] deny this. Khan didn’t say what is being reported in the media.”
The party’s answer came after Khan admitted to having called for a nonviolent demonstration to be held outside the GHQ before to his arrest, during a press conference held during a case hearing in Adiala jail, in response to the “attack” by law enforcement on his Zaman Park home.Due to his alleged involvement in the May 9 riots, which resulted from his detention in a graft case and witnessed the vandalism of various military and state buildings, including the mansion of the Lahore Corps Commander, the former premier has been involved in a number of legal issues.
The PTI founder and the party’s senior leadership have been repeatedly accused by the then-government, as well as the current one, of planning supposedly “organized” attacks on military sites.
The former prime minister is still facing up to 12 cases pertaining to the events of May 9 that are being heard by an anti-terrorism court, even if he has secured respite in certain other instances.
