Google has launched a new collaboration with the UK to allow researchers to explore potential applications for its advanced quantum chip, Willow.
Quantum computers operate in a fundamentally different way from traditional computers. Instead of using conventional processing methods like those in smartphones or laptops, they use principles of particle physics to tackle problems that standard machines cannot solve.
Through this partnership, the UK’s national quantum lab will allow researchers to access the Willow processor via an open competition. Scientists can submit proposals explaining how they intend to use the chip and will collaborate with Google and UK experts to plan and conduct experiments.
Other major tech companies, such as Amazon and IBM, are also developing quantum technologies, making the field highly competitive. Notably, Quantinuum, a UK-based quantum firm, recently achieved a $10 billion valuation.
