Under the earlier system, Google and other major technology companies sent reports to the U.S. based National Center for Missing & Exploited Children, known as NCMEC. The nonprofit then shared relevant reports with law enforcement agencies in other countries.

Google said the change is part of its ongoing discussions with the Indian government. The company also said it continues to invest in detecting, removing and reporting child sexual abuse material.

Current status Google says the proposal is part of ongoing discussions with the Indian government.
Why it matters Direct reporting could help Indian authorities receive relevant reports without an additional international reporting step.

Google Changes Its Reporting Approach

Google has traditionally used NCMEC as part of its reporting process for suspected child sexual exploitation. The new approach would allow reports involving India to reach Indian authorities directly.

Google has not described the full technical process for the proposed change. The company has instead confirmed that discussions with the Indian government are continuing.

Meta Made a Similar Move

Google is not the only major technology company changing its approach in India.

Meta recently announced a similar shift involving reports connected to India. The decision came after discussions between the company and Indian authorities.

India represents a major user market for both Google and Meta. YouTube and Facebook have large audiences across the country. That gives Indian authorities a strong interest in how platforms handle reports involving children.

NCMEC Handles Millions of Reports

NCMEC remains a major part of the global system for reporting suspected online child exploitation.

Its CyberTipline received 21.3 million reports in 2025. NCMEC says 19.5 million of those reports involved suspected child sexual abuse material.

The organization also works with law enforcement agencies outside the United States. More than 77 percent of CyberTipline reports in 2025 were referred outside the U.S., according to NCMEC. The organization says it works with authorities in 170 countries and territories.

Why Direct Reporting Matters

Indian officials have raised concerns about the time needed to move reports through an international intermediary.

Direct reporting could give Indian law enforcement faster access to information relevant to cases in the country. However, the exact effect will depend on how Google and Indian authorities put the new process into practice.

The change also highlights a wider debate about how technology companies should report suspected child exploitation across borders.

Google India Reporting Process Takes Shape

Google has confirmed that it is discussing the proposed reporting process with the Indian government. The company says it continues to invest in systems that detect, remove and report harmful material involving children.

NCMEC will continue to operate its CyberTipline and share reports with law enforcement agencies. Its 2025 data shows that the international reporting system remains heavily used.

At this stage, Google has not publicly provided every detail of how direct reporting to Indian authorities will work.

Google Changes Child Safety in India

Google’s planned move could change how suspected child sexual abuse material involving India reaches law enforcement.

The decision follows similar action by Meta and comes as governments and technology companies look for faster ways to respond to online child exploitation reports. NCMEC will continue to play a major international role, with millions of reports processed through its CyberTipline each year.
