A grizzly bear went on a rampage in Bella Coola, British Columbia, on Thursday, injuring 11 members of a school group, including two critically hurt.
Veronica Schooner, a parent, shared that a male teacher bore the brunt of the attack while children were sprayed with bear deterrent as adults tried to protect them. Her 10-year-old son, part of the group, narrowly avoided harm and even felt the bear’s fur as it charged past him.
British Columbia Emergency Health Services reported that two people were critically injured, two seriously hurt, and seven others received treatment at the scene.
The Nuxalk Nation temporarily closed the school, offering counselling for students and staff. Officials stressed, “Remain indoors and off the highway” while authorities work to secure the area.
