Nationwide Surge in Gun Training
Gun instructors across the U.S. report a spike in firearm training requests from groups who previously avoided guns, including women, liberals, and people of color. Experts link this surge to federal messaging on gun ownership and high-profile incidents like the shooting of Minneapolis residents Alex Pretti and Renee Good in January.
Pretti’s Shooting Sparks Concern
Pretti, legally carrying a concealed handgun, was shot by federal agents during a confrontation with protesters. Authorities claimed he “brandished” the weapon and intended harm, though video evidence contradicts this. The incident, along with statements from public officials, has raised fears about constitutional rights violations.
Shift in Motivation Among New Gun Owners
Lara Smith, spokesperson for the Liberal Gun Club, said the wave of interest is unprecedented. “People aren’t arming up for revolution,” she said. “They’re realizing the Second Amendment is part of the Bill of Rights, and if they don’t exercise their rights, they could lose them.”
The club has seen two- to threefold increases in requests, with a notable rise among women. Training inquiries now focus on competence and skill, not just self-defense.
Similar Trends Across the Country
Jordan Siemering of Grassroots Defense in Iowa said interest has been “stratospheric” since January. His classes attract nontraditional gun owners, including queer people, people of color, and women. He compared the trend to the post-George Floyd era but noted that current demand is even higher.
In Los Angeles, Progressive Shooters also reports fully booked classes. Tom Nguyen, founder, said the spike followed Pretti’s shooting. Northern Virginia trainer Becky Bieker echoed this, noting women clients expressed concerns about rights under current political pressures.
Broader Implications for Gun Rights Awareness
Ed Gardner of the Liberal Gun Club emphasized the growing awareness of constitutional protections. “Many people think of the Second Amendment as ‘nice to have,’” he said. Recent events may change that perception, highlighting the importance of exercising rights responsibly to prevent them from being restricted.
