William and Kate were informed by Jamaica’s prime minister that the nation was “moving on” from a constitutional monarchy and aimed to “fulfill our true ambitions and destiny as an independent, developed, prosperous country”; the two royals shared this information during their photo shoot.
In Kingston, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex were pictured with Jamaican Prime Minister Andrew Holness, who is pushing for the Caribbean country to become a republic.
Previously, Mr. Holness informed William and Kate that Jamaica was “moving on” and aimed to “fulfill our true ambitions and destiny as an independent, developed, prosperous country” during their Caribbean tour in 2022.
At the One Love premiere, the couple was also pictured with Marlene Malahoo Forte, Jamaica’s minister of legal and constitutional affairs.
She stated that the nation was seeking to “write a new constitution… which [would] sever ties with the monarch as our head of state” to Sky News in May of last year, before the King was crowned.
A referendum to make Jamaica a republic could take place “as early as” this year, according to Ms. Malahoo Forte, which means the country could soon be free of the British monarchy and have its own president.
The King is getting ready to go to the hospital for treatment for an enlarged prostate, and the Princess of Wales is still recovering from abdominal surgery when the Sussexes make their public appearance.
Earlier in 2012, Harry visited Jamaica as part of a Diamond Jubilee tour honoring his late grandmother, the Queen, who reigned for 60 years.
