The House Freedom Caucus is taking a firm stand over DHS and ICE funding as the risk of a partial government shutdown rises.
Democrats Challenge Spending Bill Over ICE Funding
Senate Democrats are threatening to block a massive spending package unless it removes ICE funding. The legislation, approved by the House last week, covers the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), FEMA, the Department of Transportation, and other agencies. If the Senate does not approve it by Friday, parts of the federal government could pause operations.
Freedom Caucus Pushes Back Against Democrats
Freedom Caucus leaders sent a letter to President Trump urging full funding for DHS and all remaining appropriations bills. They warned Democrats not to strip DHS funding to pass other spending measures.
The letter stressed that GOP lawmakers will reject any plan cutting ICE funding. Conservatives also called on Trump to explore all options to fund critical agencies, including emergency reconciliation bills or executive actions to transfer money.
Minneapolis Unrest Shapes the Debate
The letter referenced ongoing unrest in Minneapolis, sparked by protests against Trump’s immigration policies and the killing of two U.S. citizens by federal law enforcement. Freedom Caucus leaders said citizens have the right to protest peacefully but condemned attempts to obstruct law enforcement. They urged Trump to use all tools, including the Insurrection Act, to restore order.
Political Tensions Rise
Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer and other Democrats threaten to reject the full package if DHS funding stays in place. The Freedom Caucus says such a move would fail in the House, where nearly all GOP votes are needed to advance the package again.
The White House also opposes Democrats’ attempt to separate DHS funding from the broader spending bill. Meanwhile, Trump is meeting with Democratic leaders in Minnesota to reduce tensions and calm the situation.
