ISLAMABAD: Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) Chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari warned of possible conflict if the proposed amendments did not pass before October 25, the date of the incumbent chief justice’s retirement, as the coalition government was determined to pass a constitutional package focused on the judiciary.
In an attempt to approve a “closely-guarded” constitutional package last month, the coalition administration raised doubts over whether Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Qazi Faez Isa’s term would be extended.
But when JUI-F president Maulana Fazlur Rehman refused to back the government’s judicial package, the administration was unable to even bring the revisions to parliament, leaving the controversial amendments unfinished business.
