ISLAMABAD: The Islamabad High Court (IHC) postponed its decision on Tuesday on the maintainability of a petition challenging Mohsin Naqvi’s appointment as head of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB).
The case, heard by IHC chairman Justice Aamer Farooq, argued that while it is the prime minister’s responsibility to designate the PCB chairman, there is a difference between the power of an elected prime minister and a caretaker prime minister.
During today’s hearing, the petitioner’s counsel contended that a caretaker prime minister “cannot be the PCB’s patron-in-chief” because he or she has the right to appoint the PCB’s head.
Last month, Naqvi, a TV station owner who was serving as Punjab’s interim chief minister, was voted unopposed as the PCB chairman for three years after being appointed by Caretaker Prime Minister Anwaar-ul-Haq Kakar to the cricket body’s Board of Governors.
“I shall strive to address the issues facing Pakistan cricket. Reforms in cricket are urgently required,” he stated in response to his nomination as PCB chief.
He is now the 37th head of the cricket board, succeeding Zaka Ashraf, who resigned as chairman of the management committee in January.
