As the political party does not permit non-Muslims to join, the Sunni Ittehad Council (SIC) is ineligible for reserved seats, according to the Election Commission of Pakistan’s (ECP) statement filed with the Supreme Court.
The Supreme Court, with a full bench, is currently deliberating a plea submitted by the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI)-supported SIC against the denial of seats designated for women and minorities in the national and provincial parliament.
Prior to the national polls, PTI’s independent candidates for representation in the legislature joined SIC following their victory in the general elections on February 8th. This was because the party had been deprived of its electoral emblem, the “bat,” by the Supreme Court.
