Today was a positive step in the Iddat Nikah case involving Bushra Bibi and the PTI founder. Judge Afzal Majuka of the Additional Sessions heard petitions pertaining to appeals against the sentence imposed in the case.
The PTI founder and Bushra Bibi have both filed appeals contesting the penalties they were given. Their attorneys made the case for an early hearing on these appeals as well as a sentence suspension during the appeals procedure.
The judge startled the courtroom by making a daring comment after acknowledging that she had read the ruling of the Islamabad High Court. With the proviso that “If I live, I will decide in 10 days,” he said a decision on the suspension request may be made by June 27. This peculiar wording raises the possibility that the judge is dealing with personal issues that could affect the schedule.
All parties concerned, including Khawar Manika, were served with papers by the court. She was instructed to attend with her attorney on June 21. Judge Majuka made it clear that, following a review of the court record, a determination would be made regarding what would happen in the event of non-appearance.
