The Afghan Taliban foreign minister’s travel ban has been temporarily removed by the UN Security Council Committee, allowing him to visit India from October 9 to October 16, India’s foreign ministry announced on Friday.
If verified, it would mark the first time a senior Taliban official has visited India since the Taliban took control of Afghanistan in 2021 following two decades of US military occupation.
Historically, Delhi and Kabul had a good relationship before the Taliban took power.
Among the Afghan Taliban members subject to UN sanctions, which include an asset freeze and travel ban, is Foreign Minister Amir Khan Muttaqi. Diplomacy occasionally results in temporary exemptions.
