Indian authorities detained Ladakh activist Sonam Wangchuk on Friday, two days after New Delhi blocked mobile internet connections in its capital city of Leh, opened a new tab for the Himalayan federal territory where four people were killed, and accused him of inciting violent rallies calling for statehood.
On Wednesday, demonstrators in Leh moved away from a location where Wangchuk had been on a 14-day hunger strike, setting buildings and police cars on fire. Police fired fire after they clashed. According to authorities, the officers were defending themselves.
Wangchuk was arrested before a press conference he was scheduled to give, according to an unnamed police officer.
The interior ministry of India had previously charged Wangchuk.
