CHENNAI: According to officials on Thursday, Indian police have detained the proprietor of a pharmaceutical company after a cough syrup produced at his facility was connected to the deaths of at least 21 children.
Over the previous month, the majority of the children in Madhya Pradesh state—all under five years old—died after being prescribed the syrup, which was tainted with a lethal poison.
In recent years, cough syrups produced in India have drawn international attention due to reports of mortality associated with their usage in a number of nations, harming the country’s standing as the third-largest producer of pharmaceuticals and medications by volume.
The 75-year-old G Ranganathan was taken into custody by Madhya Pradesh and Chennai police early Thursday morning at his residence.
