The controversial Waqf (Amendment) Act 2025, which regulated the ownership and management of properties donated by Muslims in India, has had several of its provisions halted by the Supreme Court.
According to the news, Chief Justice of India BR Gavai and Justice AG Masih suspended a clause that gave the government the authority to determine whether or not any contested property was waqf after considering numerous pleas submitted by opposition parties and Muslim organizations arguing that the law violated Muslims’ rights.
However, the court stated that the stay was only granted in the “rarest of rare categories” and declined to overturn the entire law as requested by the appellants.
“Waqf” (which means “to stay” in Arabic) refers to the land and properties that are included in this category.
