Belarus Athletes Allowed Back Under IOC Guidelines
The International Olympic Committee has updated its position on Belarus. Athletes from Belarus can now return to international competitions. They will not compete under their national flag.
Instead, they will participate as neutral athletes. The IOC says sports participation should not depend on government actions or political conflicts.
Belarusian athletes have already competed in several events since 2023. These include global championships and the Paris Olympic Games under a neutral status.
The IOC highlights that this approach has worked without any major issues during competitions.
Russia Remains Suspended From Olympic Participation
The IOC has kept restrictions in place for Russia. Russian teams and athletes remain suspended from official Olympic competition.
These measures were first introduced after the 2022 invasion of Ukraine. Belarus faced similar action due to its support for Russia.
While Belarus now sees a partial return, Russia continues under full suspension.
Neutral Participation Model Continues
Since 2023, Belarusian athletes have taken part as individual neutral competitors. They have competed in multiple international events without representing their national symbols.
The IOC states that this model will continue. It also confirms that Belarusian athletes will be eligible for upcoming Olympic cycles, including LA28 qualification events and the 2028 Winter Youth Olympics.
Upcoming Olympic Qualification Cycle
The next qualification phase for major Olympic events begins this summer. This includes preparation for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games and the 2028 Winter Youth Olympics.
Athletes competing under neutral status will remain part of these qualification pathways.
