A ship carrying 75 Sudanese refugees caught fire off the coast of Libya on Sunday, killing at least 50 people, the International Organization for Migration reported on Tuesday.
According to the IOM, 24 survivors had received medical assistance.
Since the overthrow of tyrant Muammar Gaddafi in 2011 amid a NATO-backed rebellion, Libya has developed into a transit country for migrants escaping conflict and poverty across the Mediterranean to Europe.
According to IOM estimates, there were around 867,055 migrants living in Libya as of February 2025, representing 44 different countries.
