Many Americans automatically reach for a salad when making healthy food choices because they think it's a better option than a sandwich.

Food experts argue that this may not be the case.

“Most people will definitely say salad when asked which is a healthier option—a sandwich or a salad,” according to Vanessa Imus, MS, RDN, a nutritionist with Integrated Nutrition for Weight Loss in Bothell, Washington.

“In reality, both can be healthy or unhealthy depending on the ingredients,” she stated.
