Nearly 42% of Americans are obese, according to a recent report by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). This statistic has fueled the continued search for safe and effective weight-loss options, ranging from medical interventions to specialized diets and exercise regimens.
One medication in particular has garnered a lot of international attention lately: Ozempic. The drug, which was first created to treat type 2 diabetes, is currently being discussed extensively and used off-label to help people manage their weight.
Ozempic: What is it?
The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) authorized Ozempic, also referred to by its generic name semaglutide, for use in treating patients with type 2 diabetes in 2017. The medication, which is injected once a week, lowers blood sugar levels by encouraging the pancreas to make more insulin.
