ISLAMABAD: The swearing-in of the newly elected senators and the election of the Senate chairman and deputy chairman will be presided over by Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar.
By signing the summary, President Asif Zardari named Dar as the PO on the recommendation of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif.
The Senate secretariat stated that the presiding officer of the first session may only be a current senator in accordance with legislative practice.
A standoff between the provincial government and opposition members over the oath-taking of MPAs-elect on the reserved seats led to the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) postponing Tuesday’s Senate elections in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. However, elections were being held for the National Assembly’s open Senate seats as well as two provincial assemblies. The ruling alliance, which is made up of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP), Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan (MQM-P), and a few other smaller parties, is expected to win a two-thirds majority in the parliament’s upper house.
