The government was ordered by the Islamabad High Court (IHC) on Friday to guarantee the well-being and safety of Imran Khan, the founder of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), and his spouse Bushra Bibi, who are presently incarcerated at Rawalpindi’s Adiala Jail.
“The federal government must ensure compliance with the guidelines provided by the court,” the ruling noted. The verdict requires the former first couple to get all facilities that they are entitled to while they are incarcerated.
IHC Chief Justice Aamer Farooq dismissed a petition from Bushra Bibi about the provision of amenities and protection of fundamental rights for the PTI founder who is detained. In his written decision, the judge outlined several important recommendations.
After losing the prime ministership, the former prime minister—who was removed from office by a no-trust motion in April 2022—is mired in a judicial maze, accused of everything from terrorism to corruption.
Prior to the elections on February 8, he was sentenced in several cases, including the Toshakhana case, and was placed in prison in August of last year.
Khan was cleared in July’s high-profile cipher case and received relief in the other matters as well, such as the £190 million reference and Toshakhana.
The ex-first couple is still incarcerated, nonetheless, because of their conviction in the iddat (un-Islamic nikah) case alone.
