Italy warns AI firms over deepfake risks
Italy’s privacy watchdog has warned users and AI companies about the growing risk of deepfake content. The alert includes tools such as Elon Musk’s chatbot Grok.
The regulator said AI systems can generate realistic images or videos using real people’s faces and voices without consent. As a result, this poses serious privacy and legal risks.
Focus on non-consensual AI images
The warning comes as concern rises across Europe over non-consensual and sexualised AI content. In particular, tools that digitally alter images to undress people have drawn strong criticism.
According to the watchdog, creating or sharing such material may break EU privacy laws. In some cases, it could also amount to a criminal offence.
Cooperation with EU regulators
At the same time, the Italian authority said it is working closely with Ireland’s Data Protection Commission. Ireland leads oversight of X in the EU because the company’s European operations are based there.
The regulator also said it may take further action if risks continue or safeguards remain weak.
Call for stronger platform safeguards
Finally, the watchdog urged AI providers to act now. It called on companies to build protections into their systems to stop misuse before harm occurs.
In short, Italy wants AI platforms to prevent abuse rather than respond after damage is done.
