Crystal Palace striker Jean-Philippe Mateta’s knee injury is less severe than initially thought. Manager Oliver Glasner confirmed the 28-year-old will not need surgery. The injury had caused his potential £30 million move to AC Milan to collapse last month.
Mateta’s transfer was canceled after two medical checks revealed issues with his knee. Despite carrying the injury during the first half of the season, several specialists have reassured the club that it is manageable.
Return to Crystal Palace and World Cup Hopes
Glasner could not specify a date for Mateta’s return to training. However, he expressed confidence in the striker’s commitment to Crystal Palace. “JP will give his best when he wears the Eagles shirt again,” Glasner said. Fans are expected to welcome him warmly.
This positive news also raises hopes for Mateta’s participation with the French national team at the upcoming World Cup in June.
Performance and Competition
Mateta has scored 56 goals in 186 appearances for Palace, including eight goals in the Premier League this season. Upon his return, he will face competition from Jorgen Strand Larsen, the club’s record signing. Larsen joined from Wolves in a deal worth up to £48 million on deadline day.
Crystal Palace currently sits 13th in the Premier League. They are set to host 19th-placed Burnley on Wednesday.
