Harshest Punishment Under National Security Law
Jimmy Lai, the Hong Kong pro-democracy media tycoon, received a 20-year prison sentence for colluding with foreign forces. Rights groups called this a “death sentence” for the 78-year-old, raising concerns about his health.
Hong Kong leader praised the ruling as “deeply gratifying.” The sentence marks the toughest punishment under the law, introduced after the 2019 pro-democracy protests. Lai, a British citizen, is the most prominent figure arrested under this legislation.
Family Speaks Out
Lai’s son, Sebastien, said the verdict broke his heart. He repeatedly raised concerns about his father’s imprisonment and health with the UK government.
Sebastien added, “This sentence destroys Hong Kong’s legal system and ends justice.”
Supporters Gather at Court
Police maintained a heavy presence around the court ahead of the sentencing.
Inside the courtroom, Lai smiled at his family and supporters. His wife Teresa held back tears as they left the court.
Previous Convictions and Legal Battle
Lai has already served over five years in prison.Six former Apple Daily executives and two activists received sentences ranging from six years and three months to ten years.
Global Reaction
Rights groups condemned the sentence as “draconian” and “egregious.” Jodie Ginsberg from the Committee to Protect Journalists called on the international community to increase pressure for Lai’s release.
Elaine Pearson of Human Rights Watch said the case shows China’s determination to silence independent journalists. Lai’s legal team urged world leaders to demand his freedom.
China’s foreign ministry dismissed criticism, calling the case an internal matter. Officials said they fully support Hong Kong’s national security measures.
A Life Dedicated to Hong Kong
After China’s crackdown on pro-democracy protests in Tiananmen Square in 1989, Lai became an outspoken democracy advocate. He regularly participated in demonstrations and launched pro-democracy publications to support free speech.
