Following the announcement of a truce and hostage agreement on Thursday, Israelis and Palestinians celebrated the first phase of US President Donald Trump’s initiative to end the war in Gaza.
Although there was no immediate formal confirmation that the signing had occurred, the foes had both openly supported the agreement and were scheduled to sign it at midday in the Egyptian beach town of Sharm el-Sheikh (0900 GMT).
The ceasefire will go into effect if it is approved by the Israeli government, which will meet following a security cabinet meeting at 5 p.m., according to the office of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
The list of Palestinian inmates to be released is still being finalized, according to Gal Hirsch, Israel’s hostage coordinator.
