On Thursday, while participating in a Copa Libertadores match in Sao Paulo, Juan Izquierdo suffered a heart arrest.
In a statement on X, his team Nacional declared his passing and expressed their “irreplaceable loss.”
“Club Nacional de Football announces the passing of our beloved player Juan Izquierdo with the utmost sorrow and shock in our hearts,” the club wrote.
According to the hospital where he passed away on Tuesday, Albert Einstein in Sao Paulo, the defender had experienced “cardiorespiratory arrest associated with his cardiac arrhythmia”.
Izquierdo remained on a ventilator and was receiving neurological urgent care, according to medical officials on Monday.
Izquierdo, who led Nacional to their first league title in over a century in 2023, was in his second stint with the team.
The football community in South America is in sorrow, according to Alejandro Dominguez, president of News, the organization that oversees football in the region.
