ISLAMABAD – The leader of Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F), Maulana Fazlur Rehman, has stated that the Majlis-e-Shura, the party’s highest decision-making body, has decided not to join any alliance at this time. He has also expressed “serious reservations” about the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), citing reports that the two parties were about to collaborate against the coalition government headed by the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N).
Meetings between Fazl’s party and the previous ruling party have taken place after both parties referred to the elections of February 8 as “rigged” and expressed similar worries about the federal government’s economic policies and the threat posed by terrorism.
Concerns were raised that parliament was not brought into confidence by the Imran Khan-founded party and JUI-F when they jointly opposed the Center’s recently announced anti-militancy operation, Azm-e-Istehkam.
Last week, Fazl concurred with senior PTI leader Asad Qaiser that a military action was not the answer to the issues at hand.
They also decided to organize a political committee to resolve differences and devise a political plan, as well as to jointly play the opposition role in the National Assembly.
